Children's dentistry — gentle first visits

Dr. Hafsa is known for her gentle touch with kids. We keep visits short, calm and friendly — and our child membership plan is $29 a month if your family doesn't have dental insurance.

Why kids' dental care is a little different

Cavities can start young — even in baby teeth — and small problems are far easier and cheaper to fix than big ones. Our goal with children is simple: prevent cavities before they start, and make the dentist a place your child is happy to visit.

Dental sealants — the best cavity prevention we have

Sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where most kids' cavities start. Applied and maintained correctly, they are more than 80% effective at preventing cavities — and many insurance plans cover sealants for children at little or no out-of-pocket cost. We verify your plan first, before any treatment.

How sealants work — and what your child will feel

Back teeth have tiny grooves that can be narrower than a single toothbrush bristle — impossible to clean at home, even with great brushing. A sealant flows into those grooves and hardens, sealing sugar and bacteria out.

The whole thing is quick and easy: the tooth is cleaned and dried, a blue gel preps the surface, the sealant is painted on, and a small blue light hardens it. Each tooth takes only a minute or two. No numbing, no drilling, no pain.

Sealants can wear over time, so we check them at every visit and touch them up when needed.

Fluoride — like a vitamin for growing teeth

Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps stop small, early cavities before they need fillings. For kids, we brush on a fluoride varnish at checkups — it takes under a minute and doesn't hurt at all.

Is fluoride safe for children?

Yes. Professional fluoride treatments have been studied for decades, and the CDC has called water fluoridation one of the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. The varnish we use is a trusted, prescription-strength product applied in tiny amounts by trained staff.

Research shows a fluoride varnish applied at the dental office can reduce cavity-causing bacteria ten-fold. If your child gets small "starter" cavities, several fluoride visits can sometimes re-harden the enamel and avoid fillings altogether.

Have questions? Please ask — we would much rather talk it through than have you rely on something you read online. Read more about fluoride on our general dentistry page.

Gentle cleanings and checkups

At a child's cleaning, our hygienist gently polishes away plaque and buildup, and Dr. Hafsa checks each tooth as it comes in. For healthy teeth and gums, a cleaning shouldn't hurt — and we always go at your child's pace.

What happens at a kids' checkup

We count teeth, clean them, check how the adult teeth are coming in, and look at how the bite is developing. We also show kids (and parents) easy brushing and flossing tricks that actually work at home.

Regular visits let us catch problems while they're still small — before they hurt. Catching things early means less treatment, less cost, and a happier kid.

Are dental X-rays safe for my child?

Yes. We use digital X-rays, which need far less radiation than old-style film. One dental X-ray exposes your child to about the same radiation as eating 50 bananas — bananas naturally contain a tiny bit of radioactive potassium. The air we all breathe in a year gives many times more exposure than yearly dental X-rays.

Why X-rays matter for kids

X-rays are often the only way to spot cavities hiding between teeth, and they let us see how the adult teeth are forming under the gums. We only take the images your child actually needs.

What parents ask us

Quick answers to the three questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, just call — a real person answers at (813) 820-0071.

  • When should my child first see a dentist? Dentists recommend a first visit by the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits are short and easy — mostly counting teeth and getting comfortable.
  • How often should kids come in? Every six months for most children, the same as adults. Regular visits keep cavities from getting a head start and help kids see the dentist as a normal, friendly place.
  • What if my child is scared? That's completely normal, and we plan for it. Dr. Hafsa goes slowly, explains everything in kid terms, and you're welcome to stay right beside your child the whole time. A first visit can simply be a "meet us and look around" visit — no pressure, no surprises.

No dental insurance? Our membership plan includes a child option at $29 a month that covers routine checkups and cleanings at the office.
